Situated ate the right bank of the Loire, Briare has always been an important junction of waterways. Under the regime of Henri the IVth , Hugues Cosnier started the construction of the "Canal de Loyre en Seine" later known as the canal de Briare. The harbor welcomes pleasure boats from whole Europe to stay. It also links to the South of France through the canal latéral à La Loire.
The town hall is in fact an old castle of lords, the main office of the Association of the lords of the Briare Canal. It is 159 kilometers from Paris to get here, by boat, by car, by train.

To visit :
The museum ‘des Deux Marines’ and of the canal bridge. Discover throughout the years the evolution of the shipping industry of the river Loire and her canals. You’ll see the construction of the Briare canal and its inventive system of water supply of the canal bridge; you can see it all on several films. The river Loire and her fish won’t have any secrets for you.
58 boulevard Buyser - Tél. +33 (0)2 38 31 28 27 |
The canal bridge, made out of metal has been the longest bridge of Europe, 662.69 meters, for a long time. It makes it possible for boats to go across the river Loire without any risks. Gustave Eiffel did... the masonry, Daydé & Pillé did the steelwork. You could make a little walk to see the pumping factory that keeps pumping water from the river Loire into the partition reach of the Briare canal.
In 1851 the Bapterosses family buys an old china factory to integrate their buttons factory that is situated in their too narrow workshop in Paris. They continue the fabrication of buttons and also pearles and consequently porcelain (visit the church). The mosaic and china museum retraces 150 years of history. She is situated in the heart of the factory, still in working activity.
